I think that you made some very good points.

Some of the businesses might not have responded because they thought it was just a sales pitch. However, in this case, they passed up the opportunity to get some free publicity.

Even more important, even if the person who contacts your business is only trying to sell you something, you never know if you could turn the tables some day and sell them something. In fact, if your company is a B-to-C company, the person who is contacting you might already be a customer without you knowing it. And, you never know how influential that customer might be.
